Years ago everyone used cloth diapers. There were no Huggies or Pampers. Keeping the baby’s clothing dry was a bit of a challenge. Any baby boomer will remember “rubber pants”. Some were pull-ons and others had snaps down the sides. Yes, they did keep the baby’s clothing dry, sort of, if they fit well. I always wondered if the baby was hot. They felt pretty much like a shower curtain and I’ll bet they contributed to diaper rash. Cloth diapers are enjoying resurgence in popularity but rubber pants have been replaced by cloth diaper covers.

Cloth diaper covers come in two basic styles. One is a pull on style and you can use it with cloth diapers that are fastened with pins or a Snappi. The other style is a wraparound and closes with hook and loop tape. You will need to purchase 6-8 for a newborn and 4-6 for an older baby. Many of them are adjustable so they will fit small, medium, or large babies simply by moving the series of snaps. I think one of the major improvements over the old rubber pants is that they are attractive and comfortable. The waterproof layer is sandwiched between two layers of soft knit or cotton fabric and the elastic is covered at the waist and one the legs in many styles. This is wonderful for the baby with very sensitive skin.

Cloth diaper covers can be washed and dried at normal temperatures. It is recommended that you not use fabric softeners, bleach, or other whitening agents. Just use any mild detergent that you use for baby clothing.

The Flip One Size Diaper Covers fit from 0-35 pounds and are used with inserts to keep the baby dry. The inserts are also reusable and may be washed and line dried. They tuck securely under the flap of the covers. There are three types of inserts. The Stay-dry insert is made of three layers of microfiber fabric covered with moisture wicking suede to keep moisture away from baby’s skin. Organic inserts are made from 100% certified organic cotton. Disposable inserts are perfect when you’re on the go.

Cloth diaper covers are available in many colors and attractive patterns. There are a couple of newer things to wear with cloth diapers. The karate pants are 100% merino wool and are nice if you live in cooler climate. They also have a footed style with leather soles that is made from wool and cashmere. Both of these are hand wash and lay flat to dry items. Yes, cloth diapers are back, but recent improvements in diaper covers have made them a pleasure to use.
